Brett Fleming hit a two
out, two run homer to win the game as the Maroons took care of Five Forks, 9
to 8, in the season opener.The
Maroons went up 4 to 3 in the first and maintained at least that margin until
the last inning.Solid defense kept
Five Forks to one run scored through the middle innings.But in the top of the six, the glove work
fell apart.The Maroons gave up four
runs and, more importantly, the lead.
The bottom of the
inning started badly with Five Forks retiring leadoff man, Matt W.Grego followed with a ground ball single
to put the tying run on but, after a fielder’s choice, the Maroons were down
to their final out.The game hung on
the bat of three-time Maroons MVP and career homerun leader, Brett.
Brett missed the first
pitch, popping it over the backstop.The Maroons used the opportunity to get a new ball into the game.That bright white ball was served up,
flat, right into Brett’s wheelhouse and this time, he did not miss.That was Brett’s second career walk-off
homerun (Spring ’06, Game 2).
